The path back to homeostasis / wellbeing from this state is designed to happen naturally. But sometimes severe past experiences have shifted the way our body reacts to possible danger. It can be that our body reacts to relaxation as if it leaves us open to danger, so we will stay in overwhelm with our senses on alert (making us sensitive to sounds, sudden movements & other stimulus) for far longer than our nervous system is designed to.
Evidence suggests that long term overwhelm may lead to anxiety or sleep or anxiety disorders, while long term shut down may lead to depressive disorders. Harmful habits that are maintained long term slowly rob us of our quality of life, including inner stability, our sense of connection / safety & personal happiness & fulfillment.
Strategies like over-medicating, over sleeping, harmful habits & other short term ways to self-regulate may be how we’ve tried to take the pressure off & get relief. Yet there are more long term, less harmful strategies.
Overwhelm is neuro-sensory overload that causes us to go on high alert where we become extra-sensitive. As our system shuts down to protect us, we become numb to the intensity of our experience, but if we stay in that state, we also become numb to all the sweetness of life.
Thankfully, even brief experiences of safe conditions & supportive connection can quickly bring us back from the extremes of action oriented fight / flight or the numbing of freeze, where even our good decision making goes offline.
